Below is an image of a Major Scale. We call this position 1. Simply put, after the open position, it is the most convenient GROUPING OF NOTES to play the major scale with. I.e. the notes in the major scale are close enough at this point to reach with your fingers. There are 5 more positions (where notes are clustered close enough together to play) across the fretboard.
- Read the image from left to right
- Start at the Number 1 at the bottom of the image
- At first, it feels like you’re reading upside down, but when you start playing, it begins to make sense.
- (1) = root note. This is the first note in the major scale.
Exersize1:
a) Play through the notes WITH A METRONOME. Get familiar.
b) Play the scale backwards WITH A METRONOME at 60bpm.
c) Play back and forth through the scale at 60bpm.
